Hello to all SU friends. This is the link to the article on the letter that was written by a Buddhist monk, exhorting his sister to become a vegetarian: cttbusa.org/vegetarianism/cttbveg3b.asp [cttbusa.org/vegetarianism/cttbveg3b.asp]

Well it's nice that at least Buddhism supports us, isn't it? :)

Yes, it's nice. There are two aspects to their practice:

1. They do not kill living beings. So they are vegetarians.
2. They help to free beings that are destined for slaughter in what is known as "Liberation of Life" ceremony. They purchase birds, fishes, tortises, and other animals and set them free after performing a ceremony for them.

The liberating of living beings is a traditional Buddhist practice. By doing that, one is nurturing one's own compassionate nature.

Sweet! I didn't know about that particular practice. Sure is nice though...

Liberation of Life ceremony for thanksgiving sounds nice.

Modern turkeys are too fat and dumb to survive in the wild, they would just be eaten by wolves.

You don't mean "modern" turkeys, you mean "domesticated", i believe. There are no wolves around here. Maybe dogs would give them a hard time. I don't know turkeys, but it sounds fun.

yes i mean mordern domesticated turkeys. No matter where you live there is going to be some kind of predator and they will eat them with little trouble.
Letting it into the wild dosn't sound like it would be in it's best intrests, no matter how fun it might be.

ah hah - so here's the origin of the disgracefully negligent "liberation of life" ceremony idea

i won't double post so go here for RESPONSIBLE solutions to "saving" bred-for-food animals:

I'm glad everyone has shown concern for the welfare of the animals.

Buddhists do not just liberate (domesticated) animals into the jungle. They will find a suitable place for the different kinds of living beings.
